What are the blanking methods before forging?

Today, our Qingdao Hongtengda Forging Factory takes you to know several methods of cutting forgings before. Before the forging is heated and forged, the raw materials should be cut into reasonable size and length, which is called the blank. Usually, the billet is forged by free forging method, then the raw material (ingot, billet) is removed by two forgings, and the billet is divided according to the size for heating. The common cutting methods are shearing, cold folding, sawing, turning, grinding wheel cutting, cutting and other cutting methods, which have their own characteristics, depending on the nature of materials, size, batch size and the requirements of cutting quality. Their blank quality and material utilization efficiency are different. Therefore, the suitable blanking method for forging products should be selected according to the above conditions.

There are mainly sawing cutting method, cutting method and grinding wheel cutting method. Other cutting methods include friction sawing, electromechanical sawing, anode mechanical cutting and precision cutting.
1. Sawing and Cutting Method
Raw materials should be cut before production and processing. Sawing can cut the bigger cross-section billet, although the productivity is low and the loss of the saw edge is large, because the cutting is accurate and the cut is flat, it is mainly used in the precision forging process, and it is a main cutting method. Commonly used cutting sawing machines are disc, band and bow saws.
2. Shear cutting method
The characteristics of shearing blanking are high production efficiency, simple operation, no metal wear on fracture surface, simple tools and low cost of die. But the blanking of end quality punch and cutting method are poor. It is suitable for mass production and is widely used. The process of shearing is to press the blank through the action of upper and lower blades, and produce bending and tensile deformation in the blank. When the stress exceeds the shear strength of the forging raw material, the fracture occurs.
3. Grinding wheel cutting method
It is suitable for cutting small cross-section bar, pipe material with special cross-section, and other metals which are difficult to cut by cutting methods, such as superalloy GH33, GH37, etc. The advantages are simple equipment, convenient operation, accurate cutting length, good end quality, higher productivity than small sawblade material and lower than cold-folded cutting, high consumption of grinding wheel, fragility and noise.
