The purpose of forging is to press the internal porous defects of ingot, to make the structure dense, to obtain good metal streamline, and to make the forging process as close as possible to the determined workpiece shape. Defects in forging mainly include cracks, internal forging defects, oxide skin and folding, size unqualified, etc.
The main causes of cracks are ingot overheating, low forging temperature and excessive downward pressure during heating. Overheating can easily lead to cracks in early forging stage, poor plasticity of material itself when forging temperature is too low, and tensile cracks caused by excessive downward pressure during forging. In addition, cracks caused by forging are not cleaned up in time or not cleaned up adequately, which can easily lead to further crack propagation.
Internal forging defects are mainly caused by insufficient press pressure or downward pressure, insufficient pressure transmission to the center of the ingot, insufficient compaction of shrinkage holes produced during ingot casting and insufficient breakage of dendritic grains. The main cause of oxide skin and folding is that the oxide skin produced during forging is not cleaned up in time and pressed into the inner part of the forging during forging, or that the forging process is unreasonable.
